Opals are a beautiful and unique creation of Australia's natural environment. Each stone displaying its own individual character, seen through the colour and pattern of the stone.

The rainbow colours seen across the surface of the stone is known, in gemological terms as "play of colour" (POC). This effect is caused by the many perfectly formed and ordered microscopic silica spheres which make up the chemical internal structure of an opal. In some stones these spheres are imperfect and irregular, creating opals without "play of colour, which are termed as "common” or “potch". This work is the result of Rebecca’s exploration of this concept.
