THE ARTIST BEHIND THE WORK
Established contemporary jewellery artist, Rebecca Hinwood, designs and hand makes individual jewellery pieces that convey the distinctive qualities present within Australia’s native landscape. Rebecca works predominantly in metal, combining fine and base metals together with coloured gems, and utilizes finishes of spray paint and various patinas to create contrast and depth within her work. Her attraction to three dimensional forms has become the most central detail in the design phase of her practice. Using the traditional techniques of saw piercing, filing, forming and soldering she manipulates the metal into simplified, self-interpretive forms that resemble the botanical specimens from her observations. The vast diversity of colours and forms that so distinctively characterise Australia’s native flora species has been a never ending source of inspiration within Rebecca’s practice. Intrigued by the stories, history and culture that are intertwined in these plants, she incorporates relevant findings from her investigations to create wearable art with expressive, multi layered concepts.
Rebecca completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts, at the Australian National University, Majoring in Gold and Silversmithing, with Honours. studying under the well renowned metalsmith Johannes Khunen. She has participated in numerous jewellery and artistic short courses along with achieving a Diploma in Gemmology with the Gemmology Association of Australia. Rebecca has been the recipient of several art awards and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. She has also been a finalist in a number of national competitions, including the National Contemporary Jewellery Awards, Contemporary Wearables and The Waterhouse Nature Science Art Prize. Her most recent achievement is being one of the four jewellery artists to make the jewellery that is features in the television production The Lost Flowers Of Alice Hart.
